Hamico® 8934: The Clear Solution for Wastewater Clarification in Steel Operations

Tuesday, April 03, 2007

Recently, a mid-western steel processor ran into a problem at the clarifier on their pickle line due to a change in the make up water used in their rinse system.

The customer was unable to get the iron to drop out quickly enough when using our Hamico-8906-WT and it was causing their clarifier to back up. As a result, they had to drop the concentration of rinse aid way down and then actually cut it off altogether because of the problem.

We formulated a new product, Hamico 8934, and the problem simply went away, while continuing to give them good line-stop stain protection on the strip.

This product has been so successful, we sent a sample to their sister plant (which was using a competitor’s rinse aid) and their initial reply is that our 8934 corrected the clarity of their rinse water as well.

They are doing some more testing, but intend to change to the Hamico 8934 shortly. After reviewing this information with yet another customer they just gave me an order to try it.

This product seems to have some really impressive advantages to anyone having problems with the clarifier in their waste treatment section. Hamico 8934 is clearly a winner!

Non-Chlorinated Straight Oils Developed for Metalworking Applications

Friday, February 09, 2007

During the last few years, there has been much discussion about the complete elimination of chlorinated lubricants in metalworking operations. We are encountering more requests for products that are chlorine-free.

In Europe, the EU has taken steps to eliminate the use of chlorinated compounds. There are indications that Canada will soon implement a ban on chlorinated substances, but the actual details of any plan are still sketchy. In the US, individual customers are usually responsible for the decision to use or not to use chlorinated lubricants.

Harry Miller Corp has developed semi-synthetics and soluble oils that are non-chlorinated, and has recently developed two non-chlorinated straight oils for metal cutting operations which provide the same lubrication as corresponding chlorinated products.

We have used a new additive technology to develop two new products to meet customer needs and to address ecological concerns. Hamilube® 1955-A and Hamilube® 1955-B are lubricants designed for cutting applications such as milling, turning, drilling, tapping, reaming, boring, trepanning, broaching, etc.

Hamilube® 1955-A, the heavy-duty version, is limited to use with steel. Hamilube® 1955-B is slightly less heavy duty, but may be used with all metals. Both products compare favorably to the chlorinated products they replace in operations.

Environmentally Friendly Synthetic Stamping Lube

Tuesday, November 14, 2006

Harry Miller Corp., Philadelphia, PA, has introduced Aqualube 2029, a synthetic stamping lubricant totally comprised of renewable resources. It provides excellent lubricity and may be used for stamping, drawing, and blanking operations on all metals. Aqualube 2029 contains no mineral oils, chlorine, sulfur, or DEA. It provides indoor rust protection to stamped parts, and is easily removed by spray or immersion cleaning processes.

Aqualube 2029 offers an alternative to vanishing oils, thus eliminating V.O.C.'s, and may be a suitable replacement for environmentally undesirable lubricants in many applications.

Harry Miller Corp Research Featured on Technology Partners Website

Tuesday, August 08, 2006

Research to produce a more eco-friendly rust preventative has resulted in a partnership with the Electrotechnology Applications Center of a local college to create a new breed of products which will not employ traditional heavy metal components.

Ben Franklin Technology Partners recently "introduced" the two sides of this dynamic research partnership. Bruce Entwisle, Harry Miller Corp's President, said, “We wanted to get ahead of the game, and Ben Franklin was the conduit to get us going in a new direction.”

The partnership, the research, and the goals of this undertaking were recently showcased in the August 2006 Ben Franklin Technology Partners Keynotes website.

Long Term Water Based Rust Preventive for Indoor Storage and Transport of Metal Casting Products

Tuesday, February 21, 2006

Over the years we have received requests for longer corrosion protection than that which is provided by Steelgard 1883-4 for indoor storage or covered storage of steel parts in transit.

We have developed Steelgard 2183 as a candidate to replace solvent based rust preventives for dip tanks and spray washers after final cleaning. It is primarily designed for Long Term Indoor storage & In-Transit storage. It is readily water soluble, and has humidity cabinet protection twice as long as Steelgard 1883-4 on steel. It deposits a thin, dry, clear film which is non-staining, and contains ZERO VOC content. This would be ideal for storage of and transport of castings, and may solve those pesky problems that arise at manufacturing companies where all the water based products are not good enough, and they must resort, out of necessity, to solvent-borne products that have high VOC contents.
