Extended Cleaner Life and No Stains on Brass

Tuesday, August 05, 2008

A Massachusetts company manufacturing meter seals, locks and components for the utilities industry purchased a new aqueous cleaning system to eliminate harmful solvents in their cleaning process.

They bought a combination spray/immersion system to clean parts that had been machined with straight oil and synthetic coolant. The parts were a mixture of brass, bronze, aluminum, leaded steel and stainless steel. Initially, the company used a cleaner recommended by the machine's manufacturer. They also used a rust preventative additive for the rinse cycle to protect the leaded steel parts.

The cleaner worked well, but required replacement every 6 weeks, due to foam buildup. They also experienced staining on brass parts that required a second cleaning cycle. The company approached Harry Miller Corporation through a local distributor seeking a way to eliminate the staining and extend the bath life of the cleaner.

Harry Miller recommended Immunol 985-J, a detergent spray cleaner and Immunol 517-6, a rust preventive that protected non-ferrous parts from staining. In the initial stages of the trial, the customer noticed the staining problem had been eliminated on the brass, and was happy to be able to eliminate the second cleaning step.

They set aside the steel parts for inspection and determined that Immunol 517-6 provided the in-process protection they needed. After 11 weeks of use, Immunol 985-J was still serving well as a parts cleaner. The company dumped the bath so they could clean and service the machine.

The net result was savings in terms of:
*lower cleaner usage
*less downtime
*fewer change outs
*time and cost savings over re-cleaning stained parts

This is another example of Harry Miller Corporation products saving our customers money, while delivering process improvements in manufacturing operations.
